Online banking has been used by many of us for a while now and it keeps on improving its features that some of the online banks that I know are becoming much better than traditional or physical banks today. Though, there might be concerned people out there worrying about their safety when it comes to online banking.
Some incidents have been reported that different individuals had their online banking accounts hacked and their money stolen by thieves. Fortunately for us, we can still do something about it, avoid those kind of misfortunes and enjoy the convenience that online banking offers without worrying too much about our privacy.
How Safe Is Online Banking?
It really depends on how you do things, for some people it may not be safe for them to do online transaction but for others, things might be different. Here are some ways that you can do to make online banking safe for you and your accounts:
Ways To Be Safe When Banking Online
- Think of a strong password
We all know that in order to use an online banking system, we need to log-in first. It also serves as the entry point to us and to hackers as well and the only thing keeping them out is our very own password.
Your password must contain different characters (e.g. @,!$,%#& etc.), uppercase letters/words, and unique words. It is also advisable if its more than 10 characters and contains 2 or more words with special character in it to make it even stronger and harder for hackers to figure out.
Some common passwords that you should NOT use:
- 12345 and so on
- your birthday
- your loved one’s name
- your child’s name
- a single word from the dictionary
- Change your password often
After thinking of your passwords, the next thing you should have to do is make sure that you change them frequently. By doing that, you’re assured that hackers that are trying to guess your password must start over every time they try to hack your account.
- Don’t share your personal information to others
Sharing your personal information to others, especially to those you don’t even know, is the worst way you can do to be safe in the online world. You do not want someone to know you too much about you that he can use that to his advantage. Some personal information that you shouldn’t share easily are your address, your full name, where you work, where you keep your money or your bank’s name, and most importantly, your password/s.
- Avoid logging on to your account in a shared computer
Whenever you want to log in to your account, you should only use your personal computer and not the computer of others. You don’t know if they installed a software there that can know your password easily. Even the computer/s at your work may not be safe to for you to access your online account/s.
- Beware on where you use your account/s online
Some websites may have viruses on it that can know what your usernames and passwords are that can result to your account/s being hacked and your money stolen. Whenever you use your bank accounts online like typing your credit card number, you should be aware of the security badges on the site. When it comes to shopping or buying online, I advice you to use PayPal.
PayPal is a great website or tool that consolidates all your online transactions whether you’re paying for something or you’re getting paid. You can integrate your credit/debit card with them and use them as your only mode of payment online. They are safe and you’ll feel more secured with them, I can assure you that.
