What Are Long Term Goals And Why You Need Them

“If you are bored with life–you don’t get up every morning with a burning desire to do things–you don’t have enough goals.”

— Lou Holtz

What Are Long Term Goals?

Long term goals are basically goals that you want to achieve in the future. Long-terms goals must be well-planned and they don’t call it “long-term goals” for nothing. Unlike short-term goals that can only take days or a few months until you can accomplish them, most long-term goals have a deadline of several months or they could even take several years until you achieve them.

“Goals determine what you’re going to be.”

Julius Erving

Why You Need To Set Long Term Goals?

You need long term goals because they are essential for you in having a better career and sometimes to make your life even better. Most successful people these days all have their own long-term goals and that helped them be who they are today.

Just take Warren Buffett as an example, a simple man who decided to invest not for the short term but for the “long term”. His goal was to invest for the long run and it lead him to become the most successful investor of the 20th century and one of the richest men in the world today.

I also believe that every person has one or even several of these so called “long-term goal”, they are not just aware of them or they just don’t know how to accomplish them. Luckily for those people, the next paragraphs of this article is all about constructing a plan on how to achieve your long term goals.

“If you are not making the progress that you would like to make and are capable of making, it is simply because your goals are not clearly defined.”

Paul J. Meyer

How To Make A Plan For Your Long-Term Goal/s

  1. Think of something that you want to achieve
Of course, the first thing that you need to do is think of a long-term goal that you want to accomplish in the future. Make it as exciting and interesting for you as possible, so that you’ll be certain that you will be doing everything you can to achieve it. To help you in this step, you can take a look at some long term goal examples listed below.a person writing on a paper his long term goals
  2. Draft your plan
    • Know what are the things you need
With your goal already determined, it’s time for you to know what are the things you’ll be needing for you to accomplish it. If it’s about your business, then you should be seeking the things needed on your venture (e.g. new location, inventories, equipments etc.). That’s just to give you some idea, but the only person that can identify the things you’ll be really needing is YOU.
    • Know what you have to do
Just like what I said above, this will all depend on you. If you already know the things you need, then the next step for you is know what you’re going to do with those things.
  3. Set a start date and a deadline
Having certain dates to remember such as the start date and the end date can be helpful to you when it comes to monitoring your own progress. With both of those written down, you can easily know whether you’re doing a good job or not when it comes to achieving your long-term goal/s. The deadline can also serve as a motivation on your part, for you to do better and do it faster.
  4. Turn your plan into reality
You cannot achieve your long-term goal without doing your plan in the real world. Plans will be just ideas on a paper if you won’t do it. You do not want to waste the time and dedication you put into creating the best plan in accomplishing your goal/s, right? So, make sure that you’ll be doing it in real life and that you’ll do it every day until you reach your goal/s.

“It’s exciting setting goals and moving forward with them.”
